The cult of celebrity
The cult of celebrity belongs to one of the most ancient kinds of entertainment which people embraced in prehistoric times. And it’s evident because it’s rooted into the human nature to worship someone with underestimating own lives at the same time. In other words, we need to idolize other people.
We see celebs’ routine pictures in which they walk their dogs, have lunch with friends, have fights with their beloved (who usually are also celebrities), pick their noses and so on. And that all seems so glamorous that we immediately start copying them and feel really good doing this. This is just silly, to say the least. But that’s all true. We need to look through the tabloids. We are desperate to know what celebs drink or eat, how they spent time and who they are dating. The hope that our lives may seem just a little bit familiar with those of celebs is so appealing that some of us get lost between reality and desired life. The cult of celebrity is some kind of addiction which involves psychological aspect, obviously.
And from this point starts big business. Celebrities start to make brands of their names sticking them to all sorts of products. Perfumes, underwear, clothes, accessories, books – you may become really close to your object of passion. All you have to do is to buy his or her products.
However, that all is material matters. Far more perilous is the moral aspect. In recent years, people don’t just want to dress imitating celebrities but they also borrow their moral and political views as well. Our opinion regarding Africa is shaped by Angelina Jolie’s and Bono’s speeches. Meanwhile, climate change issues are considered as the component of pop culture cultivated on music festivals. What is more, political news is perceived from popular comedy shows (say, “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”) which absolutely misrepresent the essence of events and our perception of them.
Sadly, but the cult of celebrity is one of our favorite pastimes which will very unlikely be knocked out from our lives for a while.
